The last four years of economic sanctions by the U.S., the European Union and other western partners have ground down the Iranian economy. At this time last year, the Iranian rial had plummeted 80% from its peak, inflation had shot up, poultry and bread were in short supply and there were numerous reports of layoffs in the state manufacturing sector.
