The once sleepy pearl fishing outpost was turned into a thriving trading post when its creek was dredged and a thriving port was built. Sharjah, the UAE’s third largest city, did not initially like that. Virgin desert was transformed into some of the most expensive real estate on earth when foreigners were allowed to own property. Many Emiratis resented it at first."
